About Me

Hello!

My name is Isabelle Barfield, and my life is quite the ride, so let’s go over some of the highlights together. To begin my story, we start on the coast where colonizers first stepped, the east coast! I was born in Boston, Massachusetts, where I spent my first two years growing and taking in the world around me. While I was born in Boston, my dad was born in Meridian, Mississippi, and my mum was born in Calgary, Canada! They met in Hawaii, and then came me, their biracial, dual citizen, outspoken daughter. They are both nurses. My dad, a retired corpsman from the navy, and my mum, a trauma nurse, turned ICU Manager. The level of medicine embedded in the family birthed my love of the human body. Specifically the heart and the brain. When I was eight years old, my mum asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I told her I wanted to be a “heart surgeon.” When I was 10 or 11, I decided cardiothoracic surgery wasn’t as excellent as neurosurgery. I am now 16 in my 10th year of high school with a catastrophic passion for neuroscience. I plan to obtain a bachelor’s of science then follow medical school through internship, residency, and all that comes after. Ironically, volleyball was not the intended plan for my life when I was younger. My little brother and I had learned to ice skate before we could walk, and I figure skated for the better portion of my elementary years. As my love for figure skating began to wilt, my love for gymnastics started to grow. It faded again and grew back as dance, archery, basketball, high jump, pole vault, and finally blossomed into volleyball as a middle/pin hitter. Developmental teams turned into club teams that lead to varsity teams, and I am now in love with the sport. I currently play on Mead Senior Highschools Varsity Volleyball team and am with the Renovators Volleyball Club (RVC) as a U16 going into U17 this upcoming summer. I am happy with where I am now but highly excited to see my goals grow, skills improve, and anything else the universe tosses to me. I pride myself on my academics and my street smarts, maintaining a 4.0 in school and in my social life. I bring drive, diversity (racially and culturally), passion everywhere I go, positivity, and radiant energy on and off the court. I work painstakingly hard for everything I set my mind to, and I eagerly await the adversity, competition, and excitement collegiate volleyball has to offer!

Love,

Isabelle Barfield.

Player Evaluation

Izzy is such a great young lady.  Not only is she a very athletic person, but she is bubbly, well spoken, confident, and determined.  This kid knows who she is and what she wants to do.

If you have read her personal statement, you will know that her parents are incredibly well traveled and are supportive of Isabelle’s desires to go as far away from home as she wants to get the best education she can so she can go save lives.  She is a brilliant student who also has street smarts and is very social and personable.

On the court, Izzy is a high flying middle blocker who also plans to get training as a pin hitter.  She made varsity at her high school as a freshman when it was a 4A school, the largest classification in Washington state.  She understands that at 5’10” (not sure how tall she can get but has 6’5″ family members) she may not stay in the middle.  She is fast, has a high arm with good contact and snap on the ball.  She has a quick first step both laterally each way and off the net in transition.  She gets her elbows at the tape on her block with good penetration over the net.

Isabelle has very high standards and will make a great student-athlete at a high academic school.  She will choose a school based off of the education and how it will help her be successful in Med School while playing volleyball.  After being a figure skater, gymnast, dancer, basketball player and track athlete, she is excited for 4 years of college volleyball and I know she will work hard to be a big contributor to the success of her team.
